Grump Around the UK

April 7, 2019

While away visiting family in Kent I had an email from a friend saying Shamus Westwood would be visiting Montgomery as part of an 8k mile walk around the UK on Saturday and if I could take some photos of his visit. He sounded really interesting and was doing this walk to raise money for children with cancer - himself also having survived cancer twice. The tricky part would be getting there on Sat in time for his arrival, I had already confirmed a customer booking on Sat - but a quick phone call and an honest excuse for wishing to postpone the booking, I had Sat free.

Shamus arrived at a sunny Monty at 11am along with his 6 rescue dogs and friend Sheralyn Stuckey to a typical warm welcome from Town Crier Sue Blower and people who had gathered in the town and applauded Shamus as he walked towards the town hall.

The Mayor, Lionel Weaver welcomed Shamus officially to the town after which people gathered to meet Shamus, Sheralyn and the rescue dogs. After a cuppa tea in the town hall I had a quick chance to chat with Shamus and find out a bit more about his travels. Shamus had also been invited to the Dragon Hotel for a free meal before setting off again on his journey.

One of the inspirations for Shamus stamina to keep going is not only the help he is giving to his selected good cause but also the open arms and appreciation of what he is doing as he passes from town to town - he has met so many kind people from all backgrounds and businesses happy to help in some way - despite his own bad luck, the world is not such a bad place.

An interesting visit from a man who has lost everything but is giving so much back as he travels around the UK.
