It was great to meet up with Ralph Jandrell the other day. I had been put in contact with Ralph through a tourism initiative in Montgomery called Destination Montgomery. This small team of dedicated individuals have done some amazing work for Montgomery including Walkers Welcome, Walking Festival and promoting local businesses to ensure they get the best exposure using all media outlets. Along with this is the support to the local community including groups, events and shows. Destination Montgomery asked if I could help with some of the photography and one such person who was in need of some workshop shots was Ralph.
So, a sunny Monday afternoon as arranged and I turn up at Ralph’s workshop in Chirbury. A quick introduction and I start to set up some lights. Not absolutely necessary as there is plenty of light in Ralphs studio but just a couple to get rid of any shadows.
Ralph is an interesting chap to get talking to. From his days at Art school to where he is now and maintaining a unique style that allows him to stand out from other artists in this field of work.
Ralphs time at Art school strikes a chord with me as I notice the similarities between his trade and mine, there is so much that is different but also the same, I am working with light and colour as well as contrast and composition – Ralph also takes this into consideration when looking at designs for his own work and final output. I think I need to spend more time with artists, it’s a fascinating world and one that gives me inspiration to develop and experiment.
More work coming up through Destination Montgomery so it will be interesting to see who I meet next
